Optomechanical response of a strongly interacting Fermi gas

چکیده
We study a Fermi gas with strong, tunable interactions dispersively coupled to high-finesse cavity. Upon probing the system along cavity axis, we observe strong optomechanical Kerr nonlinearity originating from density response of intracavity field and measure it as function interaction strength. find that zero-frequency increases by factor two Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Bose-Einstein condensate regime. The results are in quantitative agreement theory based on operator-product expansion, expressing terms universal functions interactions, contact, internal energy gas. This provides an example driven-dissipative, strongly correlated nonlinear response, opening up perspectives for sensing weak perturbations or inducing long-range gases.

Observation of a strongly interacting degenerate Fermi gas of atoms.
We report on the observation of a highly degenerate, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms. Fermionic lithium-6 atoms in an optical trap are evaporatively cooled to degeneracy using a magnetic field to induce strong, resonant interactions. Upon abruptly releasing the cloud from the trap, the gas is observed to expand rapidly in the transverse direction while remaining nearly stationary in the...
متن کاملMechanical stability of a strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms
A strongly attractive, two-component Fermi gas of atoms exhibits universal behavior and should be mechanically stable as a consequence of the quantum-mechanical requirement of unitarity. This requirement limits the maximum attractive force to a value smaller than that of the outward Fermi pressure. To experimentally demonstrate this stability, we use all-optical methods to produce a highly dege...
متن کاملHeat capacity of a strongly interacting Fermi gas.
We have measured the heat capacity of an optically trapped, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms. A precise addition of energy to the gas is followed by single-parameter thermometry, which determines the empirical temperature parameter of the gas cloud. Our measurements reveal a clear transition in the heat capacity. The energy and the spatial profile of the gas are computed using a theory o...
متن کاملObservation of shock waves in a strongly interacting Fermi gas.
We study collisions between two strongly interacting atomic Fermi gas clouds. We observe exotic nonlinear hydrodynamic behavior, distinguished by the formation of a very sharp and stable density peak as the clouds collide and subsequent evolution into a boxlike shape. We model the nonlinear dynamics of these collisions by using quasi-1D hydrodynamic equations. Our simulations of the time-depend...
متن کاملPhase diagram of a strongly interacting spin-imbalanced Fermi gas
We obtain the phase diagram of spin-imbalanced interacting Fermi gases from measurements of density profiles of Li atoms in a harmonic trap. These results agree with, and extend, previous experimental measurements. Measurements of the critical polarization at which the balanced superfluid core vanishes generally agree with previous experimental results and with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calcula...
